Here in Dalsland, Nature expects you around the corner with beautiful nature reserves and troll forests with deep lakes. The national park by the Tresticklan Lake is a primeval forest area, letting the mind wander to mythical creatures, the tomte, trolls and elves. Many trees are more than 250 years old. The numerous fine footpaths allow you to explore untouched forest. Some of them are old paths leading through the Swedish Norwegian bordure land, used long time ago by smugglers and robbers.

The aqueduct and locks at Håverud
Håverud is famous for its aqueduct at the crossing of a railway bridge, a main road bridge and a flight of locks in the Dalsland Canal.

Starting at Håverud, you can travel on and on along the Dalsland Canal, a labyrinth of large and small lakes, rivers and winding canal sections. Only 10 km of the canal are dug out, the rest is a 240 km long navigable lake system. Dalsland is a paradise on earth, if you enjoy canoeing. Just dip the paddle into water and then simply glide on the clear water, what an extraordinary feeling!

You may paddle along a fixed route through the Dalsland canal or, if you want peace, simply pick a whole lake just for yourself - there are just as many lakes as you wish! The many canoe rental companies have different offers.

Dalsland is the Swedish province with the most numerous lakes. The area allows for varied fishing, all year round. Fishing luck usually is good. Pikes and perches of several kilos are taken every year.

The curing-house in Håverud sells freshly smoked whitefish (a Dalsland specialty) and salmon.
The rock carvings in Tanum are a unique example of Bronze Age artistic achievement of outstanding quality. The 45 km2 large area around Tanumshede is included in UNESCO’s world heritage list. It covers about 510 petroglyph panels, showing some 10,000 images in total.
Fjällbacka is a little Saint-Tropez only 45’ away from Vassända, on the Swedish West Coast – a tourist resort with old traditions. The actress Ingrid Bergman stayed there, when visiting Sweden. Today, the famous crime writer Camilla Läckberg lives and works there. If you want to eat well in Fjällbacka, don't forget to book at the famous restaurant Bryggan, (‘the dock’).
